Mr. Weill’s broad experience in all areas of commercial law allows him to bring a unique interdisciplinary understanding to his practice of law.  His recent work has ranged from international trade secret and patent lawsuits to advising on employee severance agreements.

Mr. Weill is a leading authority on the tax consequences of aftermarket financial product structures commonly used in the service contract, credit insurance, and debt waiver industries. He advises clients on all aspects of their businesses, from business planning to resolution of tax audits, controversies and compliance issues.  His clients in the industry include car dealers and dealerships, domestic and foreign insurance and reinsurance companies, and other entities and individuals involved in aftermarket financial products for the automotive and other retail industries.
Mr. Weill also has significant experience in sensitive family wealth planning, including restructuring estates, preparing for management transitions in family businesses, and resolving intergenerational disputes.

Mr. Weill has been retained as an expert witness in several matters, particularly professional malpractice of attorneys and accountants in tax dispute and tax shelter matters.

Mr. Weill is admitted to practice in front of the United States Supreme Court.

  • Defense of taxpayers accused of being involved in abusive tax shelters.  Mr. Weill was successful in getting the IRS to remove the client’s transaction from its listing of tax shelters – the first time the IRS has ever agreed to do so.
  • Representation of commercial tenant in highly contentious dispute over an option to renew a lease in a valuable location.  In addition to prevailing on the disputed issues, Mr. Weill obtained recovery of significant attorneys fees for the client.
  • Successful representation in numerous estate cases involving trust or property ownership situations where some sort of fiduciary abuse has occurred.

Mr. Weill has been voted a Northern California Super Lawyer since 2005 and has extensive experience speaking at conferences.  He is a board member of National Association of Dealer Counsel, and has also held board positions for the Windrush School and Lick-Wilmerding High School.
